START (ex-Summer Student Programme) is an onsite JINR student programme intended for students under 30 from all over the world who specialise in science, engineering, and IT, starting from their 4 year of undergraduate studies up to the 1st year of PhD.
Our main goal is to assist JINR laboratories in finding young talented specialists to be further employed at JINR.

Register on the website by clicking the +Student button and filling in the registration form. Afterwards, please check your e-mail for further instructions. You will receive a notification regarding your registration status once your profile has been reviewed and approved by the START team. Additionally, please monitor your profile regularly for any updates and respond promptly as needed.
Our programme runs all year round. Every year, two sessions are held - winter and summer. Each session has fixed application deadlines and a recommended time interval for participants’ visit to Dubna. Within this interval, the participants are invited to come for the term of 6-8 weeks agreed with their project supervisors. After submitting your application for a session, please await the preselection results. We strongly encourage you to check your mailbox regularly for important updates and instructions. The final selection results will be published on the session webpage.
Each Session has a fixed application deadline and a time interval recommended by the Team, within which the student is invited to come
and stay in Dubna for 6-8 weeks in agreement with the supervisor who recommended you for the position.

The START program is an ideal springboard for anyone who wants to pursue a career in science. It provides a clear understanding of what scientists actually do and helps you choose your future field of study. It's not just about attending lectures where you're just listening to someone tell you something. Instead, we worked in laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, conducted experiments, and solved real research problems. The instructors are active scientists from JINR who are passionate about their work and can inspire anyone. Project work. The main outcome of the program is your own project. My team worked on analyzing data from detectors. It was incredibly difficult, but when you start to understand the essence of the processes and see the results of your work, it's an unforgettable feeling. The atmosphere and surroundings are incredible. The most motivated students from all over the country come to Dubna. Talking to them, debating physics until late at night, and discussing with mentors is priceless. Here, you find not only knowledge but also like-minded people and friends.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to intern in Dubna. My supervisor has a very high level of theoretical knowledge, and I learned a lot during the past month and a half. I also made contact with the photonuclear reaction research group. It was a great experience.
All aspects of the program, including travel arrangements, accommodation, and financial support were exceptionally well organized, and I did not experience any issues throughout my stay. The START team maintained fast, clear, and supportive communication at every stage. Additionally, both the FLNR personnel and the research group I worked with were highly welcoming and helpful, which made it very easy for me to adapt to the environment without feeling like a stranger. The program being implemented is a unique chance to plunge into the world of nuclear physics and its applications. For me personally, participation in the program allowed to get invaluable experience in the field of neutron activation analysis. During the internship, incredible amount of fundamental knowledge about neutron activation analysis were amass, practical skills of working with the method were obtain. I would like to especially note the friendly and welcoming team of the neutron activation analysis group of the JINR IN and express my gratitude to each member of the team. Each of them is always ready to help solve a problem of any nature and complexity.
Participate in this program was one of the best experiences of my life because I learned so much about my science field of interest. I had a lot of support from my supervisor (Dr E. Dushanov) and from all the people who was in charge of the organization (especially Elena and Julia). Thanks to the START Program I was able to expand my knowledge and cooperate with greats scientist. It was a great experience and I invite all the young scientist to apply; you will not regret it.
I've learned a tremendous amount, even though my background isn't in this specific field. This internship has allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to practical situations, reinforcing my education. The organization of the programm is excellent, working during my programm was productive, convenient and useful for me.
I think that the overall experience has been amazing, from the selection process to the paperwork and accommodation. There are only two minor comments which could improve the experience of every future student. That there exists more planned visits to the facilities and coercion between different groups, for example by planning some recreational activities for the students. This could not only improve the moral overall but also provide a cultural enrichment for everyone, as stated in the JINR logo, science brings nations together.

It was an amazing experience which allowed me to work on an interesting project with the excellent supervisor.
I really enjoyed being a part of the START program. The accommodation conditions were simply fantastic - nice hotel rooms for two with a bathroom and a kitchen area, buffet breakfast included. The hotel even had a free gym. The work was interesting as it involved a real project that might be used in the future. During the program, I made a lot of foreign friends, which allowed me to significantly improve my conversational English. I am completely satisfied with my participation in the START program.

This program was amazing. I had an opportunity to work and study in the field of nuclear physics which I don't have an access to in my university. Programme START helped me to observe and apply a new approach to study nuclear physics. I was shown how important and exciting it is to apply the theory obtained from textbooks and articles in an experiment. I observed the laboratory work and conducted experiment for the first time. On the programme I learned a lot of applied features and nuances of nuclear experiment which were not told in my university. For me taking part in START is amazing experience and I am very glad that I got on this programme.

With the help of this program, it is possible to immerse yourself in the scientific life of the institute, as well as deepen existing ones and gain new knowledge and skills using modern equipment, receiving information not only from textbooks, but also from personal practical experience. To begin with, this program was good opportunity to better understand topics that I was interested in. Besides, this program was good mean of establishing new connections and getting new friends.
I was expecting the start program to be a step-by-step guide to scientific research but it was not. I was given an unexpected amount of freedom by my supervisor to explore our topic and I ended up acquiring a lot of new knowledge and skills. The program gave me the opportunity to sip on the knowledge of not only my supervisor but also many other great minds from inside and outside my laboratory. I have also made a lot of new contacts in the scientific community meet new people from around the world, many whom I now call friends.
This programme gave me an opportunity to work on real particle physics problem, starting from research to coding and data analysis using real dataset.
As promised, the programme gave an incredible preview of what it is like to be working in JINR. The excursions helped us get to know the research facilities present and the different jobs they come with. This, combined with the unparalleled job experience that the programme provided, left me feeling like I had revisited and relearnt years' worth of university material. These 8 weeks enriched my knowledge and further enhanced my dream of spending my life in research. I only hope that I will continue to have further contact with the amazing researchers of JINR on personal and professional grounds.
An excellent program for students who want to feel completely in a scientific environment. The program, in addition to a large amount of knowledge, gives a lot of new acquaintances with interesting people. I am very grateful to JINR and the supervisor for the opportunity!
I really enjoyed the participation in Programme. I met a lot of great people and got unique experience of scientific work. Every part of organization was well done, especially the conditions of living because Hotel Dubna is very cobfortable and Dubna itself is quiet and peaceful place. While I was working on my project at JINR I gained a lot of knowledge regarding my project as well as valuable insight on what working with a research group at JINR feels like. I met a lot of scientists and engineers with different backgrounds and similar love of science, who were able to show me and teach me some of the things they’re passionate about. I enjoyed hearing enthusiastic people giving student tours and talking about different JINR facilities. Besides that, I had the pleasure of meeting students from different counties, learning about their interests as well as cultures.

This program gave me an opportunity to try myself in scientific realm I had wanted for a long time. To work with real scientists is cool. I have learned a lot of new things, got useful experience. I think that program helps student to understand, if science really what they want to do, because here you are supposed to work as you will do after graduation. My point is that this program helps you to understand yourself first of all.
I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Elena Kokoulina, who guided me throughout this project and gave me all opportunities for deep understanding of calorimetry simulations using Geant4 and analysis using ROOT framework. Participation in the Programme presupposes working on an advanced-level research project under the supervision of a JINR expert. Selected students are invited to Dubna for 6-8 weeks. At the end of their stay, they prepare a written report on the work they have done, which is posted on the Programme website.
You get an opportunity to:
• be trained at the currently operating JINR facilities
• become part of the multinational team
• make up their mind on the topic of their future thesis
• find a scientific supervisor
• build useful contacts
• raise their chances of being hired by JINR.
Participants of the START programme are accommodated in the JINR hostel on a free-of-charge basis, receive a daily allowance of 2000 rubles per day, get transport, visa, and insurance costs reimbursed.
